Battalion Trek
The Battalion Trek arrived in Albuquerque during the third week of October. Blaine Bachman, NM Company Commander, arranged for and publicized a Saturday group hike along the Bosque trail from the Alameda Open Space to the Rio Grande Nature Center. From there the group turned east along Mountain Ave. to Albuquerque's Old Town. Boys and leaders from a handful of local Scouting units participated and, as happened in 1846 they were accompanied by several ladies of all ages and a few young children; all told, some fifty recruits participated. At Alameda all were sworn in to Federal Service by Kevin Henson and CPT. Bachman; thereafter, ecclesiastical leaders admonished each to do their duty and to be 'straight' in all their actions. Equipment was issued to several trekkers including knapsacks, blankets, muskets, bayonets, scabbards, and belts. The Company marched out smartly led by a detail bearing Kevin's 26-star U.S. flag (from the period 1837-1845, representing the flag from Nauvoo that was brought out of storage and flown over the musterings at Council Bluffs, Iowa; in truth the most up-to-date flag after July 4, 1846 would have had 28 stars). With the completion of the five miles required for their Mormon Battalion Trail Award, most of the Cub Scouts, 11-year-old Scouts, and their leaders left the Company at the Montaño Crossing. The rest continued the trek south, handing off weapons, gear, and accoutrements to one another as the loads became wearisome (causing several to recall Colonel Allen's remark at Ft. Leavenworth that they would be ready to throw their muskets away well before they reached California). Along the way, Kevin, Blaine, and Battalion enthusiast Ron Kirkpatrick (also dressed in authentic Battalion garb) answered inquiries (from Trekkers and passers-by alike) and entertained the recruits with stories, observations, and questions. No serious complaints were heard and all arrived at Old Town in good spirits and in good physical condition. After tarrying at the Plaza for about an hour, many retired to the Albuquerque Museum's small amphitheater where Ron hosted a panel discussion. Kevin, Kevin's wife Denny, Ron, and Blaine gave their thoughts on specific aspects of the Battalion and its history, and answered questions posed by the audience. To this writer, walking and talking with folks like Kevin and Denny as they recreate this historic trek is an experience that will last a lifetime!
